“I’m as proud of many of the things we haven’t done as the things we have done. Innovation is saying no to a thousand things.”
“Strategy means choosing what not to do.”
– Steve Jobs
Choices matter in strategy. Steve Jobs proved it. He saved Apple by saying no more than yes. Let’s dig in.
First, focus on the big wins. Jobs made only four types of computers. It’s about picking the top fruits from the tree. Put all your effort into a few key things.
Jobs once said, “Focus comes from saying no.” If it’s not part of your goal, let it go. Think of your aim as a bullseye. Keep your arrow straight.
Quality counts. Make things so good that people come back for more. It’s not about having more; it’s about having better.
Design should be simple and clear. Make products that make people say, “Wow, that’s easy to use!”
Set your boundaries. Like Jobs did with Apple, say yes to only a few things. Say no to the rest.
Use your time, people, and money wisely. Aim them at what really counts.
Know your limits. Leaders should know when the next project will change things from great to just okay.
To sum up, pick your big wins carefully. Say no to what doesn’t fit. Aim for quality, make design simple, know your limits, and use your tools right. Different people see strategy in different ways, but choosing wisely is a key part of it.
