How does your company rate compared to the greats? You may be surprised at what sets them apart…
So what makes a great company? You know the type:
- always on the upward move,
- consistently making ground-breaking decisions,
- often garnering attention and praise,
- employing talented team members that would do anything for the company…
There’s one sure-fire way that you can ensure that yours is a great organisation.
What is their secret?
They religiously uphold and defend their core values in every aspect of their business.
Core values are the anchor that keeps your business grounded.
The essential beliefs that endure regardless of what is happening on the surface.
Every decision in the company, at every level, should be based on your core values!
The Core Values Tests
Simply ask yourself the following questions:
- Would you fire a team member who consistently or blatantly violated one of your Core Values?
- Would your company be willing to take a financial hit (lose money) to maintain the integrity of a Core Value?
- Are your Core Values alive and well within your business? Are your team empowered to “push the red button”?
My ‘red button‘ test is whether a team member has the power & confidence to stop the production line if they see a problem?
Are they empowered to do the right thing?
In my previous article, I cited an example of values in action that emerged in May 2018.
Roseanne Barr, the star of the award-winning “Roseanne” show, was sacked for a racist Twitter post.
She was fired for violating the ABC’s values of “inclusiveness and tolerance”.
ABC passed the Core Values Tests with flying colours:
- Without hesitation, they removed Roseanne from the company after she violated their Core Values.
- They likely took a massive financial hit from her removal. Estimated at $100 million +.
Understanding the power of your Core Values means that if issues like these arise, the right decision becomes easy to make – at every level of your company.
My next article will focus on making your core values stick… so stay tuned.
